Well, here it is. My first post on this brand spanking new blog page. I'm currently taking an interesting course on internet technologies, and one of the assignments involves creating a blog and participating in the blogisphere!
Today was a fairly normal day in the life of your friendly neighborhood librarian. No odd questions or mysterious odors plagued the place today. It was simply an enjoyable afternoon/evening of books, books, and more books.
People always ask me whether or not it's fun to work at a library or not. My answer is usually the same as anyone's would be, regardless of their job. The truth of the matter is, sometimes it's enjoyable and sometimes it's not. People seem to have this misconception that library workers are somehow paid to sit behind the desk and "relish" in the written word all day. As nice as that would be, it's simply not what occurs at a library day to day. We are actually probably some of the hardest working people you meet. We deal with such a great quantity of public citizens that we probably put the Department of Social Services to shame! As one can imagine, strange things naturally occur. Honestly, though, as many horror stories as I could tell you, the majority of the patrons we serve at the library are genuinely nice, honest, fun people. There are a few exceptions, but the kind customers definitely make the job worth it.
Tomorrow I think I'll touch on my views about intellectual freedom as it relates to the printed word and the digital word. There have been some very thought-provoking things going on lately in regards to countries "banning" their citizens from viewing certain things. Hopefully someone will appreciate my thoughts on this!
